The University of Surrey employed H&V Building Services Ltd to carry out a full design and build project for the department of music and media. The client approached ourselves at the feasibility stage with practically a blank canvas and we worked alongside the end user, a specialist acoustic consultant and structural engineer to produce an all-encompassing facility including a TV studio, gallery, TV sound/edit and grading facility, vision and lighting engineering room, acoustic laboratory and MAC media study area.
The project commenced with an enablement works package whilst the project was being designed and included the de-canting of an existing library that was to become the main studio hub, demolition and light strip out including asbestos removal.
The key to the success of the project was to work very closely with the end users to incorporate all of their required needs and provide a state-of-the-art facility to enhance the students learning experience.
Careful consideration had to be given to staff and students who occupied floors above and adjacent to the site, notwithstanding using a shared entrance to the site.
The works were a complete success and were completed in December 2022 to rave reviews from the faculty and students alike.
